What I Learned Growing Headband Movers

By DJ Wagner, Founder · · Owner Lessons · 3 min read

I learned this the hard way

I founded Headband Movers and grew it to about $1 million a year over six years before I sold it. I'm a veteran, not a marketing school grad. Everything I know about getting customers I learned with my own money on the line and my own phone ringing.

Lesson one: the phone is the business

Early on I lost jobs I never knew about. Someone called, nobody picked up, and they called the next company on the list. Fixing how calls got answered and returned did more for us than any clever ad.

Lesson two: the map decides who gets the call

For a local service business, the Google map results are the storefront. I treated our Google Business Profile like a second location: real photos, accurate hours, services listed the way customers search for them, and fresh posts.

Lesson three: reviews need a system

Good work doesn't turn into reviews by itself. We built asking into the end of every job. Consistency beat any one big push.

Lesson four: the website has one job

Our site wasn't there to look pretty. It was there to turn a visitor into a booked estimate. Clear services, clear areas, clear phone number, easy quote form.

Why I built Local Company Hustle

When I sold the company I kept the playbook. Now I rebuild it with AI for other owners. Built by an owner, for owners.
